Details

I make use of the work of Gabbard and Weintrobe in describing powerful men who act out, and the self serving defence mechanisms employed, and describe how this may play out in interactions between surgeons and (mainly female) patients. Using 2 case examples to illustrate these dynamics, I raise questions about the state of mind of these surgeons, as well as the confusion engendered in the minds of their patients. Speaker: Dr Julian Stern, BA MB ChB FRCPsych M Inst Psychoanalysis After training in Psychiatry and Adult Psychotherapy at the Maudsley Hospital in London, Julian then worked for 17 years as Head of the Psychological Medicine Unit at St Mark’s Hospital, (a highly specialised colorectal and gastroenterology hospital) before moving to the Tavistock Centre in 2010. Initially he worked as the Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy and from 2016-2020 worked as the Director of Adult and Forensic Services in the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. He is now in full time private psychiatry and psychoanalytic practice, having trained both at the Lincoln Centre (BPF) and then at the Institute of Psychoanalysis. He is particularly interested in patients presenting with physical complaints, and the interactions between patients and their health care professionals, including the inbuilt potential for abuse of power. Julian has published widely in Psychiatric, Psychotherapy and Gastroenterology journals, teaches and supervises, and has co-edited 2 textbooks.
