Service Description

Violence in itself is not a crime, nor is it pathological. It arises from an instinct necessary for survival. But aggression can be corrupted, and it take on disturbing forms. I will describe different types of violence based on different motives, including self-preservation, predation, sadism and male dominance. Evidence from a study using implicit measurement techniques will be presented to highlight these motives for violence and to show the association between violence and excitement. I will present clinical material from a group for violent men using mentalisation based therapy to illustrate the discussion. Dr Stephen Blumenthal is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst in private practice and at the Portman Clinic, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. The Clinic is an outpatient service for people who engage in violent, criminal and sexually deviant behaviour. He assesses and treats people referred for these problems using individual and group psychotherapy. He has published widely in professional publications and in the popular press
